The provincial pass rates were:

Eastern Cape – 64.9% – an increase of 3.5 percentage points.

KZN – 77.4% an increase of 4.3 percentage points.

Western Cape improved from 82.8% in 2012 to 85.1% this year.

The NorthWest pass rate was 87.25%.

Gauteng achieved 87%.

Northern Cape 74.5%

Limpopo achieved 71.8% pass rate.

Mpumalanga province improved its pass rate from 47.9% in 2006 to 77.6% in 2013.

Highest improvement this year was achieved by the Free State which achieved a pass rate of 87.4%. It was the best performing province.

Every province except the Northern Cape improved on the results of one year ago. The Eastern Cape was the worst performing province.

The Minister announced that 562 112 full time learners sat for the Matric exams in 2013 at 667 schools and examination centres.

551 schools had a pass rate of 100% – this is an increase from 441 in the previous year.

There was also a good performance at district level, with no district achieving less than 50% in 2013. Sedibeng in Gauteng was the top performing district with a pass rate of 90.7%.

Seven subjects were evaluated by international bodies and were judged to be comparable to other countries.

Umalusi declared the 2013 Matric exams as free, fair and credible.

150 million workbooks were distributed by the Education Department to learners at various levels at school.

Individual results for learners will be available on Tuesday morning at 6am (Noon in the Western Cape).
